After visiting the islands, San Marcos, CA locals who are interested in learning more about Hawaiian culture and history will want to sign up for hula classes at Kuhai Halau O Keka'eilaua'eokalani, informally known as Halau Hula O Ka'eo. At this competitive, award-winning hula school (halau), students will learn the art of traditional hula through history, song and dance. Group Hula and Tahitian classes are available for men, women and children of all ages and skill levels, with private lessons available upon request. In addition to offering lessons, the halau also offers private shows for birthdays, weddings, and other special events.
Halau Hula O Ka'eo is owned and operated by Kaua`i native and San Diego local Kumu Keka`eilaua`eokalani Haupu (Kumu “K”). She opened the halau in 1998, just three years after moving to the mainland, in an effort to bring the beauty of Hawaiian culture and history to San Marcos.
San Marcos locals who want to support Halau Hula O Ka'eo can attend the Spaghetti Dinner & Hula Show on June 28, 2014 from 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm at the San Marcos Community Center. Enjoy all-you-can-eat spaghetti, a hula show, and a silent auction. Proceeds from the show and auction will help the students attend the E Hula Mau competition, which will be held in Long Beach, CA from August 29-31, 2014.
